G-AVKI

She is nearly back in the skies after 20 years !

My Bro recently bought her from Mick Greenway who has done a very competent rebuild. As ever, there are several things to be completed, but we should be in the air shortly - don't call me shortly as I am too tall to fly the damn thing - I jam my knees under the spar and can't get full pedal travel so will probably limit myself to a couple of circuits before relinquishing my share back to Bro.

Ray (bro) was RAF pilot, then ATC, then Civvy ATC, then RAF ATC, then Flight Checker, now retired. I am an A330 Captain for Thomas Cook at MAN, have just sold a Citabria (12th aeroplane) and my Bro and I are 90% through a Vans RV7 - God knows why he bought the Nipper !

We are based in Yorkshire, Ray has a share in a very recently restored - Piper PA12 at Breighton. G-BSYG is back in the air after a 12 month rebuild and is probably better than when she left the factory !

Please have a look at my other post as I am coming up to speed on Nippers quickly - I do the T'internet thing, Ray is far too old for all of that Cool

Hi Mike,

How is the Nipper progressing? Looking forward to seeing another take to the skies.

Hi, I have just purchased G-AVKI (from Mick Greenway who has owned her twice now).

Haven't flown her yet as waiting to upgrade from a microlight license (have been flying a Eurostar for the last couple of years).

Happy to receive any advice etc. to make ownership an enjoyable experience as all I get asked by anyone at the moment is if I have seen the twenty six spin on you tube!

Currently based at Henlow but will be over in Wiltshire once I feel comfortable flying her.

First job on the agenda is to fit new Nieman rings or bungees, any thoughts please?

Pete

I have just seen that AVKI came a cropper in December, another victim of the runaway after start up scenario.
I had a long chat with Peter about this potential at Sywell in September.
He had developed a tether system.
I have emailed my best regards to him, and invited him to fill us in with the details if he feels up to it.
I note from GINFO that he has sold it on. I hope the new owner gets her flying again soon.
Bugger.

Hi, Pete here, last owner of G-AVKI until the ‘runaway after start up’ last October!

Now the proud owner of G-AXLI (I will change my forum name shortly).

I bought G-AXLI in September 18 and after a successful registration and permit following its return to flying after a four year hibernation, assisted by the former owners, I logged a few hours of happy flight but noticed an increase in difficulty to start each time.

Yesterday, one mag failed. It has a pair of Lucas SR4 magnetos. I’ve done basic fault finding and confirmed that there is no spark available from the brass nipple that the spring in the distributor cap contacts on the winding.

Does anyone have any SR4 mags for sale after having replaced theirs with Leburgs please? I want to try and stick with the SR4s for a while longer.

I would welcome feedback on likely cause of mag failure as these were rewound by a reputable company around 40hours ago. i.e. types of HT lead and plug cap to use?

Thanks, Pete
