Re: Wing Bolts

Excellent result.

I never bothered to get my old bolts crack tested as they had been installed dry and had surface corrosion, enough to consider them scrap. The new studs were installed with liberal applications of JC54 jointing compound.

Good Luck

Re: Fitting a starter motor

If you are thinking of adding a starter to a VW engined Nipper then I suggest you investigate the weight and balance implications of the starter, flywheel, battery capable of turning over the VW (including it's mounting structure) and associated wiring. You may find the resulting weight and balance ...

Upper longeron dimension

Hi all,

I need to calculate the compressive strength to failure of the upper longeron. Can anybody tell me the gauge of the material of the tubing?

Re: Wheels

Just to add, my intentions to build a set of hubs was two fold: My 'old style' tyres are serviceable but I have no spares and I was concerned that I could get caught out with a damaged tyre away from base. That could become logistically rather tricky to sort out but the 400 x 4 is readily available....

Re: Wheels

Hi All, I guess this is to get away from the 4.95 x 3 1/2 tyres which are nearly unobtainable. I have been quoted £400.00 each  for old/new stock. Maybe the price reflects the fact that this old size is a Hawker Hurricane tailwheel and anybody who can afford to operate a Hurricane can probabl...

A question for the IT competent

Over the last few years I've spent considerable time, treasure, blood, sweat and tears working GAVTC into the state I want, both by modification and by rectification. The mods will, in the fullness of time, be available via the LAA but that misses out a massive amount of information - including blin...

Re: Hand swinging a Nipper

I'm uncomfortable with the technique of swinging from behind the prop, standing in front of the wing. The leading edge is between the mid back and shoulder height and I believe that, if the aircraft were to lurch forward on starting, then you could be toppled forward into the prop. Having a hand on ...

Re: Hand swinging a Nipper

Hi Kate, I changed from magneto to electronic ignition because the original Lucas tractor mags (SR4?) didn't have an impulse coupling so firing at a fixed advanced ~ 20 before TDC which I wasn't prepared to swing. I understand that it is not advised to add an impulse to this mag as the front bearing...

Re: Hand swinging a Nipper

Second Photo; chocks are too small. I wrote a short article in the LAA mag a while ago on a simple 'hold back' device which I've made for my Nipper specifically to make solo hand swinging safer and easier. 1834 VW: prime the fuel pump and carb bowl using the pump hand lever Operate the throttle from...

Re: Airworthiness Directives & Service Bulletins

My Nipper documents have a list of LAA requirements; wing bolt inspection and a couple of others spring to mind.

All parts present and correct - first preliminary weighing to determine the best location for the batteries.

Re: SEV Fuel Pump, service or replace

Once I managed to recondition my old pump I've just pushed on with the thousand 5 minute jobs getting the aircraft ready for it's preflight inspection. I'll revisit fuel pumps when the aircraft has it's permit. I need one anyway for a second engine which is destined to go on my Taylor Monoplane.

Re: Trim spring

Hi Neil, I can give you a firm perhaps on that. I have one on its way in the post but I won't know if it's correct until it turns up. A comment from a friend who had a friend who thought he had one made me unsure - a touch of Chinese whispers in the conversation. I shall find out at the speed of pos...

Re: First Photo…

Thank you, that's very kind. You've started me on what will almost certainly be a wild goose chase. When I was a student I used to visit my parents in Kent and, on returning to Southampton at the beginning of term, I would stop off at Biggin Hill for tea and cake and to spend a while watching the ai...
