Re: engine temperatures
Most peps put the CHT prob under the hottest cylinder spark plug; cylinder head #3, top plug.

Re: Parachute
I stopped looking after finding the first 10 accidents… C/N 3 PH-MED Spun-in during low level aeros, 28/12/64. C/N 5 D-EMIF Crashed during airshow, 14/06/64. Fatal. C/N 12 D-EBUD Crashed during low level ‘demo’ flight, 14/05/60. Fatal. C/N 13 D-EMED Crashed, out of control, 23/05/70. Fatal. C/N14 OO...

Re: Parachute
I ‘m happy to hear that. If you go through the losses of Nippers you will find the majority cause to be low level aeros. Pilots underestimated the height required to pull out and they usually stall during recovery and hit the ground. I have a bit of a ‘thing’ about external cameras on aircraft too. ...

Re: Parachute
Not really. Limit are 14.4” to 16.5” aft of datum - please correct me if I’m wrong, but 15.8” aft is well within the permitted range.
Are you suggesting doing aeros in a Nipper within the permitted weight and c of g range will cause problems?

Re: Parachute
Do tell…
I thought you declared to the AAIB that the c of g was 15.82” aft of the datum [and within permitted aerobatic limits]? Or is it another incident?

Re: engine temperatures
In order to make full sense of any replies you may get from others you will need to define your own aircraft equipment fit.
1. Which cylinder temp are you monitoring?
2. Do you have an oil cooler fitted, and what size?

Nothing a set of DC’s can’t sort. I wish you many happy hours of tube bending.

Re: MK3 nipper bits
David, after your ownership the aircraft changed hands a few times. I had to replace a lot of poor quality woodwork repairs that had been done after your careful ownership of the aircraft. I think the engine went to a non Nipper owner in Wales for a Taylor Mono? Airframe was sold ‘as-is’ when I got ...

Re: MK3 nipper bits
The tube OD is easily measured. The wall thickness can be measured if the firewall is removed and the exposed tube have not been welded shut.

Re: MK3 nipper bits
Hi Jim, The ‘lump’ or backplate is about three inches long. The engine and backplate was removed from a standard Mk II Nipper that was originally been fitted with a Stamo 1400cc engine (and backplate) from new. At some point the engine had been replaced with a 1600cc unit and fitted with a several o...

Re: MK3 nipper bits
Hi Jim, you underestimate the weight of the VW type fitted to the original Mk II Nipper. The engine had a useless lump of metal attached to its rear. This lump is then bolted with the engine to the airframe. The lump weighed (my estimate) of perhaps 10 kg or more! The dimensions of the lump’s fusela...

Re: MK3 nipper bits
Ross, I think the point of the Nippers is to have affordable and enjoyable flying; it doesn’t matter which way up you do it. If it puts a smile on your face, job done. Now back to weight and balance. When added or subtracted, ‘motion-lotion’ in the fuel tank of a Nipper is shown in the Owners Manual...

Re: MK3 nipper bits
Hi Ross, You are absolutely correct in the requirement to check the empty weight and balance after any significant change in equipment added or removed to or from the aircraft. Rather surprised a change of engine type got past an inspector. As to your point, ‘Also the pilot sits a little aft of the ...

Re: Nipper Project For Sale.
The engine is probably of little use. It will make a nice restoration project if everything else is present.
£1,500 would be my offer.
