I guess my concentric heat exchanger tube for hot air for carb heat might perform that function.

Re: engine temperatures

Thanks for that photo Neil, clearly worth a thousand words! I've got a pair of the VW Heritage pipes as a starting point but they will need to be fettled as my VW doesn't have the prop extension so the pipes would touch the prop. My proposed pipes are similar to yours but with a longer perforated se...

Re: Fun level going up :)

:-D :-D :-D :-D
makes me want to abandon the domestic paperwork and go to the airfield to work on the Nipper!

There seems to be some vertical 'tramping' on the forward looking camera. Is this the mount flexing under G or prop slipstream influence?

Jolly Good Show

Re: Parachute

Hi Sven, I think I know the arrangement you describe, the pilot essentially wears just the harness and the pack is attached at the shoulders. I haven't seen one and think they are rather unusual, perhaps made to order rather than 'off the shelf', but certainly a possible solution. If your Nipper has...

Re: Parachute

Hi Sven, I've looked into this and come to the conclusion that I can wear a parachute if I move the stick 70mm forwards and have schemed a mod for this but it's on hold while I get the aircraft back to service. You can get thin packs which carry the contents full length down the back and forward on ...

Re: engine temperatures

Hi All, My aircraft doesn't have any fit yet. My enquiry was prompted by disappearing down a rabbit hole whilst investigating a new exhaust system with silencers fitted. My current arrangement is four short exhaust stacks pointing down. This is the arrangement on the Nipper Mk3 drawings I have and i...

engine temperatures

Good Morning Nipper fans,

Can anybody give me an idea of the oil and cylinder head temperatures they see when flying their Nipper ?

Re: Exhaust arrangement

I won't be doing much bending, that will be sorted by Reef Exhausts, specialists working out of Bicester. My part will be withstanding the painful shock of opening my wallet. Other Nipper folk provided some very useful pictures earlier https://www.tipsynipper.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=628 I...

Exhaust arrangement

Hi Nipper fans, I'm preparing a new set of exhaust pipes to replace mine which have probably only got this season left due to corrosion. My old set have the pipes as short open stacks pointing down out of the cowling and this is as shown on the Nipper Kits and Components GA drawing. However it looks...

Re: MK3 nipper bits

That photo explains everything. I wonder why the early units went to the complexity of such a casting rather than a 'Peacock' style installation. I have a very similar casting from a Revmaster conversion. It's about the same depth and has a very similar magneto attachment, although only a single mag...

Re: MK3 nipper bits

That engine confuses the heck out of me! Is that as fitted to a Nipper? That chunk out the back must result in the engine being located about 25mm forward of the Mk3 because all that metal casing won't get past the diagonal bracing tubes in the forward frame. This forward shift would mean the aircra...

Re: MK3 nipper bits

The Nipper is quite tender on the C of G position. The acceptable limits for flight, as laid down on the permit release, lie roughly about the position of the main spar. Fuel is well forward of the spar and the pilot well aft. There are three critical conditions which must be addressed; 1. with zero...

Re: Wing Bolts

Excellent result.

I never bothered to get my old bolts crack tested as they had been installed dry and had surface corrosion, enough to consider them scrap. The new studs were installed with liberal applications of JC54 jointing compound.

Good Luck

Re: Fitting a starter motor

If you are thinking of adding a starter to a VW engined Nipper then I suggest you investigate the weight and balance implications of the starter, flywheel, battery capable of turning over the VW (including it's mounting structure) and associated wiring. You may find the resulting weight and balance ...
