Re: Nipper G-AVXD

Sven, Acro built a number of VW aero engines, not many have the factory installed inverted fuel and oil system. I think one was G-AWDA, another was G-AWDD. ‘DD’s engine was sold on to another Nipper that was at one time based at RAF Henlow, I cannot remember the registration. You may have some succe...

Re: New engine

Hi Sven, Can I suggest that you try and make contact with the owner of a Nipper fitted with an Acro engine. They should have a copy of the Acro engine info sheet. It contains schematics of both the fuel and oil system. It is NOT recommended you try contacting Barry Smith who owned Acro. His health is...

Re: New engine

Sven, Let me add a few thoughts to the last post I made. The object of modifying the oil system is to supply oil under pressure to the engine in any attitude. A 3-way valve is fitted to facilitate this. When in unusual attitudes the oil migrates to parts of the engine and has to be returned to the s...

Re: New engine

Sven,

I am reluctant to answer that question as it may depend upon the overall arrangement.

Re: New engine

Hi Sven,

For my interest, can you give details of your engine fit?
What carb?
Which ignition fit?
Electric starter?
Backplate fitted or not?

On the last point, if fitted, did you have to modify the standard mounting?

Thanks.

Re: New engine

Sven. You are welcome. Have a look through the tech gen, particularly the early Pitts articles. You will find a lot of similarities to the system used for the Acro. Aircraft Spruce used to carry useful generic parts that could be of use or adapted. As for the flop tube, it was a piece of fairly rigi...

Re: New engine

Sven, greeting. Well done with getting your Nipper back flying. Four area to concern yourself with if you want to think about when turning your existing VW into one with an inverted fuel and oil system: • Fuel system - engine • Oil system - engine • Fuel supply - airframe • Weight. You may not think...

Re: Nipper firewall

Jim Bending metal is not too difficult when it’s a straight bend, but bends on a radius you really need have access to a press and facilities to heat the material. However, for a cold bend, you should use the correct bend allowance for the material - preferably more than the minimum. To lose the exc...

Re: Nipper firewall

Hi Jim, I don’t have a drawing but in the past I have one. Ex RAF tin-basher so it was no biggie for me. Use gripper pins or bolts to secure the old firewall to your new material by drilling the 2BA size holes through the bracket points. Then mark around the firewall perimeter using a pencil (use of...

Re: Zentih carburettor - service or replace?

Jim, I would say the CD150 is well proven on the Nipper. Owners with 1835 VW tend to go for larger diameter induction pipes. I would imagine that may not be possible with the 1600cc unit? But what size jets to use?
