Re: Restoration of ZS-UAD, Tipsy Nipper T66 mk 1
Progress to date is as follows: Shaped the iso foam, using a lowly bread knife, into more or less the shape that i had in mind and then block sanded the whole lot to a reasonably smooth finish. Mixing many batches of Rhinolite and applied this over the iso foam. Rhinolite is a product used in the dr...

Re: What engine oil? SAUER engine
Hi Gary, If i may jump in here, the oil gallaries in the vw crankcase are small in comparison to an aero engine and aero oils are reasonable thick oils which adds up to flow problems. The problem is not so much the running at high rpm but keeping the oil temps in the green. VW's are air and oil cool...

Re: Restoration of ZS-UAD, Tipsy Nipper T66 mk 1
Hi David, After much head scratching etc, i came to the conclusion that i would not be able to form the 10 degree angle. So i decided to cheat.......a little :D . The curve at the top of the firewall now goes just under the lip of the fuel tank. Luckly i have 2 sets of rubbers, so should be ok for a...

Re: Fitting a radio
Hi, Well done, I wish you many fun filled hours in your Nipper. :D The antennae i use is the common old garden variety that most Cessna or Piper aircraft use. The way i'v mounted it, is a tad crude but has given no problems :D I use a panel mount (Narco com 11A) and have great range and no interfere...

Re: Restoration of ZS-UAD, Tipsy Nipper T66 mk 1
Hi All, Quick update, Fuse has been welding including the Mk3 engine mounts, seat mod and the ugly repaired tubes that i removed. I had made small gussets for each corner behind the cockpit and these are attachment points for the cross bracing wires. These were welded in at the same time. Today i ru...

Hi Neil, Have seen the S&S eye bolts but....... i would (at all costs) try and source the correct item. I have been trying to fax NK&C icw Nipper eye bolts but not seem to be connecting to their fax. Might have to resort to snail mail :( I'm assuming NK&C are not emailable! The casing yo...

Hi Dave, I used a short lenght of sheet bent to maybe 80 degrees and fluted the one side. I'm not sure what will happen over a longed distance needed to form the top and botom piece. Thanks for the offer of a drawing but the f/w i made years ago is a copy of the original....so i can use it as a temp...

Re: Restoration of ZS-UAD, Tipsy Nipper T66 mk 1
The original firewall was a mass of hole surrounded by rather crinkly metal, so i made a new firewall (years ago). At that time, i throught my new firewall was well made but now the stakes have been upped and this f/w has been retired :D Now, the problem with the Nippers f/w is the top and bottom ha...

Re: Restoration of ZS-UAD, Tipsy Nipper T66 mk 1
Today's effort considered of firstly, sweep and tidy the workshop. Secondly, started with the bracing tubes that meet at the rear of the new engine mounts. Had to been extra careful here. one wrong more and the tubes turn to scrap if shortened to much.......no room for error  Have bee...

Re: Restoration of ZS-UAD, Tipsy Nipper T66 mk 1
Today's effort considered of cutting out the two top tubes (MK 1) and started shaping the new tube ends. I battled for hours to shape only two ends but seemed to have had reasonable success in the end. The aim was to achive a very close fit between the new tubes and the existing structure. going.......

Re: Restoration of ZS-UAD, Tipsy Nipper T66 mk 1
Todays effort consisted of hand filing the mounts to suit the tube profile and to align the engine block perfectly with the front of the fuselage. I quickly built a engine "stand" that can be finely adjusted up and down plus forward and rearwards, so to achieve correct alignment, i turn th...
