Cooling
Cooling
Having successfully flown GAVKI last week I am running too hot, cyl hd temps 415 on hottest, anyone have any baffle plans suitable for rear baffle on Saur 1800 with Ellison carb, or any V Dub with Ellison. Not a lot of room in there and lots of cables etc jostling for space.Had very aft C of G on weighing, needed to put about 8 pounds weight under front end of sump, having first removed the three lead weights attached to the tail post. Handles well, first time back in the air since 1992. See U-Tube under GAVKI.

Re: Cooling
Well done sir!!!!!
I like the colour scheme
Unfortunately i cannot help you with baffle patterns as my Nipper's engine hangs out in the breeze
Country side looks lovely, is it in England somewhere?
Wish you many happy and safe hours !

Glen

Re: Cooling
Hi,
I have some card jigs for the baffles I made for mine, but you have the Barry Smith new type cowling, so you would have to trim them to suit that cowling. You will also need some baffle edge seal: ETS 619 from:
http://www.sealsdirect.co.uk/bbCMS/shop ... tmentId=3.
Are the present baffles very poor fit? If they are then that is the first thing to address.
Just some other thoughts:
What is your compression ratio?
Is the ellison set up correctly?
What ignition are you using and is the advance correct?
What oil cooling do you have?
Is the duct that takes the cooling air to the oil cooler a close fit to it so the air can't escape?
Did you use "cool tins" that fit under the cyl's?
Did you clean out any "flashing" between the cyl' head fins and around the exhaust ports?
What exhaust system are you using?
Where do you have the CHT probe?
Make sure you check the cyl' head bolt torque before next flight, also the valve clearances. The Never exceed CHT temp' is 234degC/455degF

Re: Cooling
Hi Niel, thanks for the pointers, I will work through the list point by point.Having expended a whole Swedish fir forest in paper paterns I seem to be getting close- have one in not so flexible heavy card, though I think I will have to unbolt the intake manifold to get it in ,even in two pieces. Good thought about the cyl hd bolt torque figures, will check before next flight. Will let you know results -Ray Newall
Re: Cooling
Hi,
I have a set of old MKIII baffles if you want them. Do you need the ballast weights, clips and 'J' bolt you removed. If not I need to re-install them in G-AXLI which has had them removed sometime in the past.
