What's the general view on engines. I am not interested in Jabirus etc. ( I can't afford such luxuries!) Ideally I would like to fit a bog standard VW 1600 but realistically is the 1600 too small or is it perfectly adequate for normal use and reasonably short takeoffs??

Re: Engines
Hi Ben,
1600 will get you going, but the performance will be on the poor side. I had an 1834cc, which was fine, this size engine is easy to build up as it uses a stock crank/rods, but uses 92mm cyl's. The engine case would need to be machined to accept the larger cyl's. I now run a 2180cc which is great!!.......and have a Revmaster 2331cc to build and install, I am really looking forward to that. I have stock of parts that could be built up for an 1834cc if you are interested. Whatever you do stay away from the "Bug" shops, they mostly sell junk, even GPAS has fallen well short by just selling on "Bug" bits that are unsuitable. If you really want a nice VW go to Revmaster, they are only slightly more expensive, but the quality is "head and shoulders" better than most of what is available on the aftermarket.
