Zentih carburettor - service or replace?

Postby JimCrawford » Sat May 01, 2021 4:51 pm

Hi All,

My Rollason 'Ardem' engine is fitted with a Zenith 32KL-P10 carburettor. Has anybody any source for a service kit for this unit? I cannot find one. Maybe it is just the gasket which separates the bowl from the throttle portion. Alternatively is anybody using an alternative carburettor for which spares are easy to find and which can be substituted for the Zenith?

Back in Alan Ayles’ day NK&C used to keep overhaul kits in stock. Don’t know if the new lot are worth a try.

Thanks Paul, I contacted Paul Grellier but doesn't hold any Zenith spares. I've got an enquiry outstanding with a vintage carb business but this particular version isn't on their website.

The best advice I've had so far is to swap it out for a Stromberg CD150, which is much more common.

Jim, I would say the CD150 is well proven on the Nipper. Owners with 1835 VW tend to go for larger diameter induction pipes. I would imagine that may not be possible with the 1600cc unit? But what size jets to use?

Good Morning Paul,

I think I'll gather information about the Stromberg alternative via this and the LAA website and also Engineering. The information I have so far is that the CD150 is fine for the 1835 although the jets need changing. There must be many examples of this engine with the CD150 flying, it should be just a matter of copying the set up.

So if there is anybody out there in Nipper land with this information I'd be grateful to know.

If my engine runs with the Zenith I'll continue with it but prepare to change in easy time. My concern is that it will need a service but I dare not take the top off because I won't be able to replace the gasket, or any other part.

Hi Jim,

I can service the Zenith, if gaskets are not available I can make them.

I may also have a Stromberg with the correct jets for sale if you are interested.

Best wishes,

Neil
