SEV Fuel Pump, service or replace

Hi All,

My Rollason 'Ardem' X engine is fitted with a SEV (Marchal?) 46 DA 40 (46 C?) mechanical Fuel Pump. Has anybody any source for a service kit for this unit? I cannot find one. Maybe it is just a membrane. Alternatively is anybody using an alternative Fuel Pump for which spares are easy to find and which can be substituted for my SEV?

Thanks, Ronald

Word of caution here; I believe some after market pumps have plastic parts substituted for metal bits in the original. I picked this up from one of the engineering forums (fora?), These may be unsuitable, I can't remember why.
I have the same engine so will be looking for a service kit or replacement soon. I'll post if I have any success.

What carburettor do you have?

Jim

Thanks Jim!

I have a Zenith type 32 KL-P10 carburetor.

I think you'll find that getting a service kit for that carburettor will be challenging. I've tried many specialists, including the manufacturer, and the usual response I've had was 'haven't seen one of them for years!'. By good fortune I was wandering around the flea market on the last day of the rally and found what looks like an identical one which I now have as a spare, although without a service kit. I also picked up a CD150 which many seem to use as an alternative but that will require quite a lot of inlet pipery fettling as it stands a bit tall to go on top of the engine.

Thanks Jim!

Do you know what/who else used this Zenith carburetor, I want to believe there were more users than just Rollason. Back in the day it was pretty common certain parts were used by different brands, a carburetor was no exception. It might help our search for a service kit if we have a (better) direction.

I’ll let you know if I find any leads.

Kind regards.

The only information I have is that one of the answers to my enquiries was that it was used on a post war Morris van.

I think Renault and Citroen used them as well.

Hi everyone, long time since I was on the forum.
My Nipper had the old SEV fuel pump and I searched high and low for a spare to no avail. In the end I found a replacement pump, Quinten Hazel pump QFP79. It has 6mm push on connectors (use O clips) for the fuel with a delivery of 1.4L/min @ 1800rpm (about 4psi) . It was fitted in 2003 and supplies an Ellison throttle body. I do remember that the flange mounting holes were a tad tight over the studs other than that all good and still working fine (perhaps I shouldn't tempt fate  ). I also fitted a new pump push rod and guide. The push rod was adjusted to 99.1mm long.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Stuart

An amendment to my previous message re replacement SEV fuel pump to a QFP79.
Having just found out about and read AIL MOD/ENG/VW/001 and inspecting my fuel pump (QFP79) I have discovered that the pump has a plastic rocker arm  . So now I have to look for a replacement pump as well :( even though mine is in excellent order and has been running for 19 years.
Hope no one has dived in and purchased a QFP79 !!

Cheers
Stuart

Some progress on the SEV pump.

I emailed a photo of the pump to VW Heritage and they sent me what they thought would be the service kit, unfortunately it turned out to be completely unsuitable. This is probably because they were working on the age of the engine and the assumption it was in a vehicle. I think the SEV was never a part used in a vehicle so that caused the disconnect.

I have managed to recondition my pump:

The non return valves were not seating properly due to deposits and corrosion of the seats. I lapped them with jewellers rouge.
The cork gasket under the cover had distorted and cracked so the pump preferred to suck air from there rather than fuel. I made a gasket from some sheet rubber I had lying about and now the unit is serviceable. I'll replace my homemade gasket with a nitrile one when I can get round to the local hydraulics firm.

Fortunately the diaphragm was fine. I hope it will be possible to dismantle to replace in the future. I'll have to find a source of thin nitrile sheet, my stuff is of unknown origin. I've put an offcut into a jar of avgas to see if it deteriorates.

If you check the engine for sale on the forum you will see that it uses a pump which is readily available. It looks taller than the SEV and may require another bump on the cowling. Spares are also available, the photo of the rebuild package (VW Heritage) shows a metal rocker arm, it is worth checking with them, they are helpful.

Good Luck

Jim

Hi Guys,
My two peneth:
The Citroen 2cv uses is similar pump, it is low profile, in its assembled form the fuel pipes are in the wrong position, but I believe it is a simple operation to remove the top body and rotate it, the bolts are in an arrangement that will allow this. The QH pump has part plastic part metal lever, but I have found a supplier that sells a quality unit with a metal lever. It also has the priming lever which is handy:

I do have an old pump in good condition if anyone wants to buy that.
Best wishes,
Neil

That looks just the job and it's cheaper than the rebuild kits. I may just invest in one for the spares box.
A combination of rotating the top and replacing the brass fittings with angled ones as necessary would surely make the fuel pipery work fine.

Hi Ronald & Jim,

Did you purchase the pump? If so how was the quality?

Once I managed to recondition my old pump I've just pushed on with the thousand 5 minute jobs getting the aircraft ready for it's preflight inspection. I'll revisit fuel pumps when the aircraft has it's permit. I need one anyway for a second engine which is destined to go on my Taylor Monoplane.
