Silencing the Nipper exhaust system

Postby G-ARBG » Mon Sep 20, 2010 11:53 am

All,

I am concerned that my Nipper IIIb G-AXLI is very noisy and could eventually become the source for complaints from neighbours. The system is of the type that points vertically down from the engine ports. Earlier Nipper exhausts faced fully aft exiting at the rear of the cowlings.
Is the earlier MKIII system any quieter and has anyone investigated or carried out improvements to either system?
If so I am sure that both myself and others would welcome some information, particularly if they know of an organisation prepared to make the pipes or parts required.

Hi David,

I have a pair of silencers on mine that fit under the cylinders. It is far quieter than the std ones that point downward, the ones that point back are not much better. I have a set of the ones that point back from my original system before restoration made from mild steel I think, I will have a look and see if they are serviceable, if so will drop you a line.

On my list of things to do when I have got less time is to make up a new system that is 4 into 1 with a silencer, but unfortunately I have much higher priorities at the mo'.

Good luck,

Neil
